Author Julie Rogers Pomilia
Roy and Dale Onstage and In Between is what happens when you open the family scrapbook to random pages and find yourself somewhere between the public and private lives of your grandparents.
From a granddaughter’s perspective, it’s a formal history mixed in with a “here’s what was really going on” version of events—affectionate, sometimes irreverent, and the occasional “that probably wasn’t supposed to be remembered, but here we are.”
Woven throughout are delightful glimpses of the many familiar faces who crossed their paths along the way—Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Marilyn Monroe, Walt Disney, Queen Elizabeth, Clint Eastwood, Babe Ruth, and Elvis, among many others—revealing a mosaic of unexpected and often charming connections. Whether sharing the stage, the screen, or simply a passing conversation, these intersections paint a broader picture of an almost forgotten era when entertainment felt both larger-than-life, yet surprisingly close-knit.
This is Roy and Dale not only onstage, but who they were five minutes before, and ten minutes after the cameras rolled. The stuff that didn’t make the headlines, but probably should have.
Julie Rogers Pomilia is an educator, storyteller, and lifelong keeper of family stories; some legendary, some wonderfully ordinary. As the granddaughter of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, she grew up around movie sets, music, horses and a whole lot of laughter, learning that life is as much about the quiet, in-between moments as it is of time in the spotlight.
With more than thirty years in early childhood education, Julie approaches history the same way she approaches life; with curiosity, gratitude, and a sense of humor. She is also the author of the children’s picture book, The Ridiculous Party, and Your Heroes, My Grandparents: Granddaughter’s Love, a book filled with personal memories and behind-the-scenes stand-alone short stories from growing up with Roy and Dale simply as Grandma and Grandpa. She doesn’t take herself too seriously, but she deeply appreciates the life she was given, and loves passing those stories along, one memory at a time.
There are a variety of reasons to pick up her latest book, Roy and Dale, Onstage and In Between. Maybe Roy and Dale are nostalgic for you, maybe your parents told you about them, or maybe you have no idea who they were at all. No matter the reason, you will be glad you picked this one up.
