Johanna Siegmann has an eclectic background in theater (as a director, actress, writer, and producer), painting, jewelry design, and published author (The Tao of Tango). These multiple creative avenues have given her a solid background in the process of creation, and an appreciation for the work required behind each discipline. Most importantly, she has learned how to work with, and for, a wide range of personalities, which has been instrumental to the success of her latest career: photography. Marrying her past artistic experiences with a camera has been a natural, satisfying, and increasingly successful venture. The technical and craft knowledge she gained from theater has deeply influenced her photography choices for lighting, wardrobe, styling, color, visual illusion, and movement.
Johanna’s interest in photography began in 2008, in the aftermath of a bout with breast cancer. As part of her journey, she joined an online weekly, themed photography contest, where she learned many of her photography skills. It was the creation of an image for one of the site’s challenges that sparked her career in photography. She also studied lighting and technique at the Julia Dean Photography Workshops, and with a number of great photographers including Kevin Scanlon (portraiture), and Brooke Shaden (compositing). An intense, 10-week workshop at JDPW gave birth to her current passion: people with their pets.
